The Four Worlds

qabalah_magickOne of the most significant aspects of the Tree of Life is the idea of the Four Worlds.  There are different models of this, but in the Western Mystery Tradition the common model is for each of the triads moving down the Tree to correspond to a World.  Thus Atziluth (the Archetypal World) contains the Supernal Triad of Kether, Chokmah and Binah.  Briah (the Creative World) contains the Ethical Triad of Chesed, Geburah and Tiphereth.  Yetzirah (the Formative World) contains the Astral Triad of Netzach, Hod and Yesod.  Finally the fourth World of Assiah (the Making World) contains the sephira of Malkuth, the elemental plane where we exist.

However, each Sephira, whichever World it is in, also contains aspects of all of the Worlds.  This is expressed through the levels of energy in a sephira – the Divine Name (corresponding to Atziluth) is the pure divine creative essence or logos; the Archangel (corresponding to Briah) is the lens for that divine energy; the order of Angels (corresponding to Yetzirah) are the dispositers of that energy; and the Heaven (corresponding to Assiah, and being the planetary, stellar or zodiacal attribution) is the manifestation of that energy.

The significance of the Four Worlds in magick, both in the process of manifestation down the Tree of Life, and of realisation up the Tree of Life, is one of the key aspects to studying Qabalah.
